Position: Mechanical Certified Engineering Technologist and/or Process Piping Design
and Draftsperson

The FVB Toronto office, located in Vaughan, is looking for a candidate who has experience with industrial plant mechanical processes, piping layout, and drafting competency using Autodesk AutoCAD 2D/3d and/or Revit. The candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline oriented, collaborative environment. Responsibilities.

  • Assist the mechanical engineering process in the technical design for energy plants, distribution piping and building interface.
  • Conduct field visits and assist in feasibility studies and conceptual designs to meet client requirements.
  • Create concepts and develop detailed designs, tender packages, and construction documents for mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Experience with document control and/or development of processes.
  • Perform calculations and prepare drawings, schematics, and specifications
  • Assist in equipment sizing and selection
  • Assist in the preparation of feasibility studies.
  • Read, understand, and apply Ontario building codes and CSA Power Piping Code, ASHRAE, and NFPA standards
  • Assist in ensuring quality standards and project deadlines are met
  • Aid in problem solving of issues within projects administrated by Designers and Engineers
  • Able to manage and prioritize multiple projects of varying size and complexity at the same time.
  • Capable of working independently on defined tasks
  • Establishing good working relationships and communication with design leads, project managers, clients and other team members to coordinate, ensuring the compatibility of design
  • Assist with administrative duties and other tasks assigned by Principals or Project Managers required to assist in the success of the firm

Qualifications.

  • Completion of be in the process of completing a Technological Program specializing in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Process Piping Design/Drafting
  • Experience with P&ID diagrams, knowledge of CAD process plant symbols
  • Intermediate / advanced competence in AutoCAD 2D/3D and/or Revit with proven experience preferred or willingness to acquire additional training.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical construction, installation methods, technologies, planning and management, commissioning process, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of all mechanical systems from both the design and installation perspectives including: HVAC systems, piping systems and plumbing systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical system from design and installation perspective.
  • Willingness to learn and/or be familiar with various HVAC, plumbing systems and develop layout of pipe and duct runs in co-ordination with the structure, electrical and architectural components
  • Must be a team player with strong technical and communication skills. Must be fluent in the English language. Excellent verbal and writing communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to handle multiple projects within a fast paced environment
  • Site experience is an asset.

Duties

  • Work alongside a project manager to lead the technical portion or the detailed design of a project.
  • Lead a mechanical engineering team in the technical design of combined heat and power plants, thermal heating cooling plants, distribution piping and building interface projects.
  • Assist with preparation of feasibility studies.
  • Assist with estimating and costing of projects.
  • Apply previous knowledge and experience to design projects.
  • Review the work of Intermediate and Junior Engineers.
  • Work with CAD designers to ensure all drawings are accurate and complete.
  • Liaise with the clients, consultants, contractors and vendors to coordinate, share project information and/or discuss project and design related problems.
  • Develop and modify project specifications
  • Lead the selection of energy plant equipment (chillers, boilers, engines, turbines, cooling towers, heat exchangers, etc.)
  • Oversee the preparation and issuance of equipment tender packages, tender process, bid evaluation and recommendation report
  • Take responsibility of leading specific design tasks:
    • P&ID Drawings
    • Project Specifications
    • Equipment selections (boilers, chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, piping, control valves, expansion and pressurization tanks)
    • Design calculations (pipe and duct sizing, stack sizing, annual energy consumption calculations, heat loss, efficiency, etc.)
    • Piping Stress analysis and support design
    • Regulatory Design Registrations for Piping
    • Hydraulic analysis
    • Preparation, review and sealing of construction and tender documents.

Minimum Experience / Education Requirements

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) status in Ontario
  • Proficiency working in a Microsoft Office environment
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills
  • 10 plus years of P.Eng. status in a similar field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in district cooling and/or heating design or construction
  • Experience in combined heat and power plants
  • Industrial Plant Design Experience

Responsibilities

As a Senior Engineer your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Work as a Senior Engineer for our Ottawa office and participate on our team for work on district energy systems, particularly the ESAP Project.
  • Lead the team performing the building conversions, and assist on overall system conversions, including greening opportunities for ESAP.
  • Preparation of conceptual and detailed feasibility studies, proposals, and miscellaneous work,
  • Preparation of design documents,
  • Stamping of design documents,
  • Project Management of multi‐discipline projects. This activity will include:
    • Manage engineering deliverables, schedules and budgets,
    • Manage construction schedules and budgets,
    • Manage sub consultants
  • Site visits including preparation of site visit reports and deficiency reports,
  • Construction contract administration.
  • Provide mentoring, guidance and supervision to engineers and technicians working on joint projects,
  • Coordinate work deliverables and staff loading with Engineering Manager,
  • Promote a culture of teamwork and cooperation within the company.
  • Ensure compliance with FVB standards, and good engineering standards & practices.
  • Travel to FVB offices and Client sites within Canada. You could be expected to be away from your home base for up to 5 days per month.

Minimum Experience / Education Requirements

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) status in Ontario and eligibility in Quebec
  • Proficiency working in a Microsoft Office environment
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills
  • 10 plus years of P.Eng. status in a similar field

Preferred Qualifications

Junior Mechanical Technologist or Engineer
Location: Burnaby, BC

FVB’s expertise lies in the study, design and construction of District Heating and Cooling systems.  We are looking for a junior mechanical technologist or engineer with a sound design and drafting background and the ability to fulfill various roles within a project. Our specialist team of engineers have a genuine interest in using environmentally responsible energy sources such as combined heat and power, biomass, and waste heat recovery.

  • Prepare design drawings using AutoCAD under the direction of the engineering team.
  • Assist with preparation of feasibility studies
  • Support estimating and costing of projects
  • Support completing specific design tasks:
    • Hydraulic analysis of buried piping systems
    • Small equipment selection (heat exchangers, pumps, piping, control valves)
    • Design calculations (pipe and duct sizing, annual energy consumption calculations, etc.
    • Preparation of construction and tender documents for small projects
  • Assist in the preparation of specifications and drawings for large projects

Minimum Experience / Education Requirements

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor Degree of Applied Science or Engineering in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Eligibility for registration as an Applied Science Technologist or Graduate Technologist or EIT in British Columbia
  • Thorough working knowledge of AutoCAD is required, including experience completing schematic drawings, P&IDs, and piping and equipment layouts
  • Previous experience in an engineering position, preferably in the HVAC or energy industry, would be an asset. Good understanding of building HVAC and related mechanical systems (pumps, piping, boilers, heat pumps, etc.) would be beneficial.
  • Practical field experience in the construction of plants and installation of process equipment would be beneficial.
  • Proficiency working in a Microsoft Office environment.
  • Good written and oral English communication skills.

GENERAL

The majority of the design work will be performed at FVB’s offices in Burnaby and on local construction sites.  It is likely that some travel will be involved within Canada from time to time.

  • Conduct site visits for construction supervision and project commissioning services and issue reports

Minimum Experience / Education Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree of Applied Science or Engineering, specializing in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional registration with PEO (Professional Engineers of Ontario), or eligible
  • 5+ years professional experience in an engineering position preferably in the HVAC or energy industry
  • Project management experience
  • Proficiency working in a Microsoft Office environment
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in district cooling and/or heating design or construction
  • Experience with combined heat and power systems
  • Experience with hydronic based HVAC design
  • Experience with municipal services design
  • Experience with steam HVAC applications
  • Experience with steam to hot water retrofits
  • Written and oral French communication skills is an asset, though not required.
  • Ability to obtain Reliability Security Status with the federal government within 6 months, as a minimum.
