Junior Mechanical Technologist or Engineer
Location: Burnaby, BC

FVB Energy is a leading consulting engineering firm specializing in sustainable energy solutions.  FVB designs and develops European style District Energy Systems.

FVB’s expertise lies in the study, design and construction of District Heating and Cooling systems.  We are looking for a junior mechanical technologist or engineer with a sound design and drafting background and the ability to fulfill various roles within a project. Our specialist team of engineers have a genuine interest in using environmentally responsible energy sources such as combined heat and power, biomass, and waste heat recovery.

Summary

FVB is seeking a Junior Technologist or Engineer to work in our Burnaby office. The successful candidate will support the design and construction team for projects during each stage of development. As an employee of FVB Energy, the successful candidate will apply accepted engineering principles to design initiatives. The position requires a candidate who:

  • Is comfortable working on multiple projects at different stages at any given time
  • Possesses excellent communication and time management skills
  • Is self‐motivated and able to work as part of a team or individually

Duties

  • Assist the mechanical engineering team in the technical design of thermal energy plants, distribution piping and building energy transfer station projects
  • Prepare design drawings using AutoCAD under the direction of the engineering team.
  • Assist with preparation of feasibility studies
  • Support estimating and costing of projects
  • Support completing specific design tasks:
    • Hydraulic analysis of buried piping systems
    • Small equipment selection (heat exchangers, pumps, piping, control valves)
    • Design calculations (pipe and duct sizing, annual energy consumption calculations, etc.
    • Preparation of construction and tender documents for small projects
  • Assist in the preparation of specifications and drawings for large projects

Minimum Experience / Education Requirements

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor Degree of Applied Science or Engineering in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Eligibility for registration as an Applied Science Technologist or Graduate Technologist or EIT in British Columbia
  • Thorough working knowledge of AutoCAD is required, including experience completing schematic drawings, P&IDs, and piping and equipment layouts
  • Previous experience in an engineering position, preferably in the HVAC or energy industry, would be an asset. Good understanding of building HVAC and related mechanical systems (pumps, piping, boilers, heat pumps, etc.) would be beneficial.
  • Practical field experience in the construction of plants and installation of process equipment would be beneficial.
  • Proficiency working in a Microsoft Office environment.
  • Good written and oral English communication skills.

GENERAL

The majority of the design work will be performed at FVB’s offices in Burnaby and on local construction sites.  It is likely that some travel will be involved within Canada from time to time.

Project Engineer
Job Type: Full Time

Duties

  • Assist the mechanical engineering team in the technical design of thermal energy plants, distribution piping, building energy transfer station, and building steam-to-hot water conversion projects
  • Assist with preparation of feasibility studies
  • Assist with the preparation of engineering proposals
  • Support estimating and costing of projects
  • Apply previous knowledge and experience to design projects
  • Work with CAD designers
  • Liaise with the clients, consultants, contractors and vendors to coordinate, share project information and/or discuss project and design related problems
  • Take responsibility of completing specific design tasks:
    • Hydraulic analysis of buried piping systems
    • Small equipment selection (heat exchangers, pumps, piping, control valves, expansion and pressurization tanks)
    • Design calculations (pipe and duct sizing, stack sizing, annual energy consumption calculations, etc.)
    • Preparation of construction and tender documents for small projects
  • Assist in the selection of energy plant equipment (chillers, boilers, gensets, cooling towers, heat exchangers, etc.)
  • Assist in the preparation of specifications and drawings for large projects
  • Play key role in preparation and issuance of equipment tender packages, tender process, bid evaluation and recommendation report
  • Conduct site visits for construction supervision and project commissioning services and issue reports

Minimum Experience / Education Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree of Applied Science or Engineering, specializing in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional registration with PEO (Professional Engineers of Ontario), or eligible
  • 5+ years professional experience in an engineering position preferably in the HVAC or energy industry
  • Project management experience
  • Proficiency working in a Microsoft Office environment
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in district cooling and/or heating design or construction
  • Experience with combined heat and power systems
  • Experience with hydronic based HVAC design
  • Experience with municipal services design
  • Experience with steam HVAC applications
  • Experience with steam to hot water retrofits
  • Written and oral French communication skills is an asset, though not required.
  • Ability to obtain Reliability Security Status with the federal government within 6 months, as a minimum.

Marketing & Business Development Coordinator

FVB Energy Inc. is a consulting firm specializing in cogeneration and district energy systems, with offices in the Canada, Sweden and the US.  Currently we are looking to fill a full time position for a Marketing & Business Development Coordinator person for our Vaughan (Ontario) office.  Some of the activities that you will be tasked with include:

Intermediate Electrical Engineer

FVB Energy Inc. is a consulting firm specializing in cogeneration and district energy systems, with offices in the Canada, Sweden and the US.  Currently we are looking to fill a full time position for an Intermediate Electrical Engineer for our Vaughan (Ontario) office.  

Ideal candidates should have:

  • Minimum of five (5) years electrical design for multi-discipline detail design and construction projects; along with
  • Experience with distributed generation (< 25 MW) and process to connect generation to local distribution grid (i.e. CIAs, SIAs, GPR studies, coordination studies, generator protection and control, medium and high voltage gear selection and design, power transformation)
  • Building automation and controls

The preferred Candidate would have:

  • An electrical engineering degree
  • Is comfortable working in a Windows environment,
  • Has good written and oral communication skills, and
  • Is excited by the opportunity to be part of an organization that helps North America clients develop and expand district heating, cooling and cogeneration businesses.
  • Able to manage projects that are outside the electrical discipline

Assignments will also include:

  • Technical support to feasibility studies
  • Detail design,
  • Preparation of construction documents,
  • Cost estimating,
  • Site supervision services, and
  • Communication with clients.

Registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is a requirement.
